The Rock of Gibraltar is famous for its Barbary Macaques and its breathtaking views across the Straits of Gibraltar towards the Atlas Mountains in North Africa. This tour will take us away from the hubbub of the busy Main Street and the bustling streets and into the Nature Reserve home to an amazing and varied flora and fauna. Gibraltar boasts of endemic, local flowers such as the Gibraltar Candytuff, Gibraltar Sea Lavender and the Gibraltar Campion as is the home of our monkeys, Barbary Partridge, rabbit and many species of bird. Gibraltar is on the migration route between Africa and Europe. Our walking tour will explore the Alameda Botanical Gardens, the Windsor Bridge, the Second World War Tunnels.
Our tour starts at the entrance to the Alameda Botanical Gardens and we will walk in a southerly direction, along Engineer Road leading us to our climb to Jews Gate where we will enjoy beautiful views of Morocco and the Straits of Gibraltar.
Our journey then turns north as we walk the Douglas Path towards St Michael’s Cave, long believed to be bottomless, where we will visit and enjoy the natural beauty of the spectacular cave with its stalactite and stalagmite formations and enjoy the light show, the “Awakening”. We will then walk downhill towards Queens Balcony where the late Queen Elizabeth II stood during her visit to Gibraltar in 1954 after her coronation. We will hike down towards the Windsor Bridge overlooking unrivaled views of the Bay and City of Gibraltar.
From the Windsor Bridge we walk the length of the Rock towards the Northern face where we can visit the Tower of Homage of the Moorish Castle built in 1160AD. We will then walk down through the Old Town back to the City Centre where we end our tour.
